Wow I just can’t believe the temps there. I have never experianced that kind of cold. I used to snowmobile in Old Forge New York and have been out riding at about -20F. That would seem like a warm day to you. I have been coming to these web sites for a few years now and love the insight you all bring to life down there. Keep up the good work.

Thanks so much to all of you enduring another Winter at the South Pole. I am an Army officer who has deployed in combat zones many times and I am in awe of the professionalism, sacrifice, dedication and spirit of all of you “Polies”. Please let me know if there is anything I can do to spread the good word or help you out in any way. You are all truly an inspiration to America and the International Scientific Community!

I could never in my wildest dreams of in comparision to the Blizzard of 1977 and ’85 that it was so cold in terms of wind chill factor wise down there it is +82 degrees and sunny here just to make your day alittle pleasant I am from Buffalo N.Y. I often wonder if how the penguins’ heart can survive in such temperatures?

First,in climatology history was Robert Falcon Scott’s terrible turn in the weather a freak, or just a normal deviant.
Second do you think any down there could repeat Shackletons journey beyond elephant island? How much respect do you have for them knowing the conditions…I know I’m dumbfounded, humbled to no end! Also a bit confused why Roald seemed to have much better weather. Luck of the draw? Thank You

I have read so much about the antarctica. Adventurers, explorers and the people who winter over there. I have often thought about going there for a winter or two but it seems like there are only very specific jobs and very hearty popel who can make it. I hope you stay entertained. Are there still tons of hot dogs lining the halls down there?

Eydie, I dont think this is a question forum. I submitted my post and never received a reply in any form.I guess its a common mistake that mostly everyone made! I wish they would designate a person to answer our questions here. Perhaps they will someday..

Some of the entries bring a smile on my face. Of course all of us are antarctica enthusiasts but Ihope that the people who write that they would like to spend a winter there are REALLY 12 years old.
Of course I would like to see the pole too, but please only briefly!!!
I recommend the books of Oslund for a glimpse at the tortutes traversing Antarctica and Arctica.

hi all, kisses from Italy…

To Ron: My friend, you don’t see an Antarctic sunset, you experience it. And the only way to do that is to commit to the long haul: the grueling temperatures, the fantastic community life, the life of a winter-over. Greetings from 90 degrees south!
June 13th, 2009 16:47
I apprecaite Ron’s reply to my quetiosn for the team in Antarctic, back in 08. I was under the assumption that that someone was heating one the many thousands of hot dogs from the halls on their room stove and reading these. I spose I should find some place where someone wants to tell me about the frozen sites or I could jsut be fascinated by these comments….peace lvoea nd icebergs…e

Was the South Pole Air Traffic Contoller Nov 1984 – Feb 1985, Nov 1985 – Jan 1986, Nov 1986 – Dec 1987. The Weather is as I remember the Winter-Overs telling me. The Facilities look fresher. I wouldn’t know what to do without seeing that big Dome though. it is still the best duty station I ever served.

How life down there? Please respond before Fri.08/28/09. One question is how do you think global warming is changing the seasons down there as it is up here? I`m a big space nut, like my momma says.. Our weather is changing so fast that even the seasona don`t know what season it is. Do you have high waves? Take care.
Best Regards

AB9JW@comcast.net and a zulu time that would be best to chat. Have a good day, since I guess you might not be having nights yet.
