Christmas at the South Pole

Sunday, December 24th, 2006

Another Christmas at the South Pole. This is a great place to be for the Holiday Season. A White Christmas is guaranteed, I don’t have to listen to Christmas songs on the radio in endless repeat and there is no shopping. To quote Station Manager BK Grant: “Here is to a Christmas without shopping malls and traffic”.

In preparation for the big Christmas dinner people get together to bake cookies and pies, clean and cut vegetables, and set the tables. I think our Christmas dinners are a bit rowdier than you average family gathering, as evidenced in the pictures.

Team BICEP gathered to watch Heißer Sommer, a 1968 East German musical movie. This is probably one of the weirdest movies out there and it has its cult following. Only problem seems to be, that some of my BICEP colleagues can’t get the tunes out of their heads.

International Speedo Day

Sunday, December 17th, 2006

I am not entirely sure how this got started but somehow a plan materialized to institute International Speedo Day at the South Pole. Admittedly, turnout for the group picture was somewhat low (one) but it was at short notice and this is only the first one. I am sure we will gather some momentum next year.

On the up side a stellar effort was put into making some Speedos out of duct tape and RF tape.

Update: Speedo weather today?

International Speedo Day: Real Men Wear Speedos
I took this picture of ”Wedgie Man“ at Venice Beach. The funny thing is that he made everyone smile. He was especially popular with the Latino ladies. So he was my inspiration to start International Speedo Day at the South Pole. Here he comes. Strike a pose. It almost looks like he has done this before.
